Meth lab seizures increase slightly in Kansas

The number of methamphetamine lab seizures in Leavenworth County, Kansas was up slightly last year, but still significantly less than three years ago, a sheriff's office spokesman said.

The Kansas sheriff's office seized 11 labs last year, up from eight in 2002. In 2001, the sheriff's office seized 26 labs.

In Kansas, the number of reported lab seizures appeared to be down for the second year in a row in 2003.

Kansas Bureau of Investigation statistics for all but December show that meth lab seizures last year in Kansas totaled 482. The final total for 2002 was 728, and 847 in 2001, according to the Associated Press.

Maj. Dave Zoellner, Leavenworth County, Kansas undersheriff, said 2001 is "kind of when (his department) got in the meth business" because of officer certification in clandestine lab recognition and cleaning.

Zoellner suggested one reason why the number of lab seizures in the county dropped after 2001 is because violators have been arrested.

"They're getting some (prison) time," he said.

Zoellner said some may have moved as county officers have become better trained to identify and handle the labs. He said meth users are paranoid.

He also said some meth manufacturers use what he called "box labs." These are labs that can be easily moved around, he added.

"It's easier to conceal by moving around," Zoellner said.

The sheriff's office experienced a first last year. The department was involved in the seizure of three meth labs in one day.

During the August search of a meth lab site in Leavenworth, Kansas authorities found information that led them to a property in the southwest part of the county.

Kansas authorities searched the property the same day and found two meth labs. One was in the camping trailer. The other was found in a parked car.

With some of the chemicals used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine, Zoellner said he doesn't understand why anyone would want to put the drug in his or her body.

And given the state of some of the meth lab locations, Zoellner said he doesn't see how people can live that way. Sadder still, he said, is the fact that some meth manufacturers subject children to this lifestyle.
